National Occupational Standards

Since their introduction more than fifteen years ago National Occupational Standards (NOS) have been developed for a whole range of occupations, encompassing a variety of industries, from engineering, to retail, to horticulture. Comprehensive suites of Occupational Standards are also available for an array of generic activities including administration, management and finance.

Forming a benchmark for good practice they set out standards of competence expected of an individual in their work. However, there are numerous other uses for them. Providing guidance for recruitment and induction purposes, directing appraisals, informing training and supporting the design of job descriptions are just some of the more widely known examples.

Pye Tait's fifteen years of conducting research into learning and skills issues gives us an almost unrivalled and in-depth understanding of numerous sectors and issues relating to skills development of industries’ workforce. Over the years a whole variety of Sector Skills Councils (SSCs) and their predecessor organisations have commissioned Pye Tait to undertake the development of suites of NOS. NOS can also form the basis of National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) and Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs).
